Split Rock

The project is composed of two shimmering ‘rock-like’ objects, that sit anchored to the lower concourse floor of Brookfield Place, seemingly formed by the downward ‘waterfall-like’ force of the escalator which descends from Santiago Calatrava’s Allen Lambert Galleria above.

The project’s geometry is a response to the challenge of a tight adjacency to the escalator and a site condition which demands visibility from 360 degrees and from above. The split form of the shop addresses the dynamic pedestrian movement of Brookfield place, and optimize natural light from above.

The thin shelled objects are made from steel, diamond-patterned mesh, that hover above mosaic tiled platforms that sit in contrast to the stone-patterned floor of the concourse. The mesh shells, illuminated from within, provide a translucent beacon-like quality that reflects against the mirrored finish of the escalator.
